Beto Puca is a 34-year-old high mountain driver for the Vacazur Group, with extensive experience in the field. He has now proudly taken on the challenge of pioneering the operation of dual-train trucks, or bitrenes.
In English05/11/2024In the lofty expanse of the Puna, where an arid landscape and towering mountains dominate the horizon, dual-train trucks have started navigating the challenging roads, revolutionizing cargo transportation in the area. GVH Logistics, a pioneer in introducing these vehicles to the Puna, has made significant strides in integrating this technology into its fleet, enhancing transportation efficiency while reducing environmental impact.
This development highlights several key points. Firstly, it demonstrates that local logistics companies are equipped to meet the demands of the mining sector and continue evolving. Collectively, these companies are capable of addressing current needs while also being prepared to support new projects and mega-projects expected to launch in the near future.
Driving Bitrenes in the Puna: Challenge and Experience
“Beto” Puca, a seasoned truck driver with GVH, is one of the first to operate bitrenes in this harsh environment. “I was preparing to travel to San Antonio de los Cobres when they called me,” Beto recalls as he shares his story with Salta Mining.
“I’ve worked as a mechanic since I was 13 years old and began driving trucks on my own at 17. Now, at 34, I’m tackling a new challenge: driving dual-train trucks in the Puna,” Beto explains. He is well aware of the difficulties posed by the region’s terrain. “I’m proud to be part of this groundbreaking project. After numerous trial runs, we can finally say: ‘It’s possible.’ Luis, our leader, emphasizes the importance of our role as high-mountain driving specialists, aiming to position our company among the best in the country.”
Beto’s dedication and pride extend beyond his professional life. “There is so much pride in our work that our children, playing with their toy trucks, pretend to be GVH drivers,” he says.
Revolutionizing Mountain Transportation
GVH’s introduction of bitrenes has proven to be a strategic move, optimizing transportation and reducing environmental impact. “Bitrenes can carry the load of one and a half regular trucks. With four bitrenes, we can transport the equivalent of six regular truckloads, reducing fuel consumption, tire wear, and costs for the mining companies. This also helps lower pollution, a goal set by Luis that we’re successfully achieving,” Beto explains.
For Beto, mastering bitrenes in the Puna represents not just a professional milestone but a reaffirmation of his career and expertise. “Adapting wasn’t too difficult. Maneuvering, especially reversing, requires new techniques, but I’ve got the hang of it now. Bitrenes are transforming transportation in the mountains,” he proudly notes. “We are the first company in the Puna to use this technology, and we are the first drivers to implement it.”
Deep Roots in the Puna
Beto’s connection to the Puna runs deep. Born and raised in San Antonio de los Cobres, he knows the roads intimately, having spent his life navigating the region’s challenges. “I’ve been in this area all my life. The roads were much worse before; the route from Quijano to San Antonio wasn’t even paved,” he remembers.
GVH’s advancements have not only benefited the company but also the local community, providing employment opportunities and fostering economic growth. “Working for a Puna-based company is a source of pride. Most of us are locals, and we continue to hire and train people from the area,” Beto emphasizes. He has also taken on the role of mentor, sharing his knowledge with the next generation of drivers.
Beto Puca exemplifies the perseverance and dedication of workers in the Puna. His story highlights the transformative impact of advanced technology, like bitrenes, in remote and challenging regions. With GVH’s support and his unwavering commitment, he continues to pave the way for the future of mountain transportation.
